I, the Graduating Engineering Student Turned Incidental Writer ( second stride) – Starting sweat

Foreword.

This series of articles, on the travails and torments of required writing for school term papers, thesis or dissertation, are purposely taken in the point of view of the student in the graduating or senior years. Hopefully, they reveal how much anguish and agony he goes through in every phase of the activity he is obliged to present, even to defend in front of a panel of peers, prior to receiving his much toiled-for diploma.

Previously.

The graduating student, grudgingly yielding to the demands of their English professor he secretly  refers to as Darth Vader, is forced to do a formal study on an economic proposition that has not anything to do with his technical course nor engineering background, and to do it without  help.

Procrastination is not one of my favorite attributes, so I immediately set out to meet this monstrous task of a literary requirement for graduation. I began by simply reading the titles of the entire thesis compilation previously approved by professor Vader, just getting the hang of what pleases him. I found out that a great number deals with how third world countries were affected by financial foreign policies initiated in the developed nations. Quite recently, however, in the wake of global market recession harshly hitting many of these industrialized nations, their indulgent attitude towards the not so fortunate has turned less tolerant and more self-protective. I think I found where I could concentrate my focus on.

It is only natural that I, being human, should pick a subject matter that would be easy to delineate, not take too much time from partying, require not much research, and have similar prior studies where data, references, methodology, et. al. may quite easily be lifted from. Of course, everything would be subject to approval from the advisor, who does the exact opposite. A total Darth Vader!

So, no sooner than when I suggested to Mr. Vader that I plan to do “A Study on the Comparative Rise in the Standard of Living of Third World Economies Contrasted to the Amount of Foreign Aid Donated by Industrialized Nations”, that it was flatly contravened. I began to have sleepless night, or have nightmares soon as I am able to doze off, and started to draw up blueprints for a rocket to send him to the moon or further.

I am not one to give up without a fight; that is another of my better traits. I ran the list again in my mind; wondering if somewhere in there is something even I myself would be intently interested to find out. Moreover, I want my project to have an impact, a usefulness beyond the possible grade I could hope for.

I got permission from the librarian to pull up on the internet those previous works on third world economies and how they were influenced or helped or fueled by technological advancements. Although there were three or four that dealt with the so-called Business Process Outsourcing, I was surprised there was none that actually presented hard figures to support its continuing existence.
